Sharp Type

About us

Sharp Type is a digital type foundry based in New York City and Granada, Spain. The foundry produces custom & retail typefaces for print, digital, and environmental design– for brands, design houses, and publications. Sharp Type designs typefaces with utility and beauty for the modern era.

Lucas Sharp, founder, typeface designer
Lucas Sharp graduated from Parsons School of Design in 2010, where he studied under renowned typeface designer Joshua Darden. From 2009 to 2011, Sharp worked as a draftsman at Darden's Studio, where he learned the craft of typeface design from a true master of the digital era. Sharp’s thesis project at Parsons, a typeface called Hera Big, was named one of MyFont’s “Best Typefaces of 2011”. Sharp’s third release, Ogg, won a Certificate of Excellence from the Type Directors Club (TDC) New York in 2014. Shortly after founding Sharp Type with partner Chantra Malee in 2015, Sharp was commissioned by Michael Bierut and Pentagram to create a suite of original typefaces for Hillary Clinton's 2016 campaign based on his typeface Sharp Sans. Lucas is currently living and working in Granada, Spain, with his fiancé, Chantra Malee, where he designs typefaces, paints, hikes, and tends to their garden.

Chantra Malee, founder, vice-president
Growing up the eldest daughter in a family of small business owners, Chantra Malee learned the fundamentals of running a business very early on. Her passion for design, culture, and entrepreneurism brought her to Parsons School of Design, where she graduated with honors from the Design & Management program in 2011. From 2011 to 2015 Malee worked in branding and management for boutique creative agencies and start-ups in New York City. After overseeing numerous prestigious projects as the Senior Project Manager at Love & War, she left the firm to start Sharp Type with Lucas Sharp in 2015. At Sharp Type, Malee handles business, brand management, marketing, graphic design and sales. Though currently based in Granada, Spain, Malee is an avid traveler and enjoys seeing the world with her fiancé in search of new experiences, perspectives, and inspiration.
